Why this journey?
Stay based near Nitinaht Narrows rather than carrying a full backpack along the entire 75 km trail.
Visit places such as Tsusiat Falls, the Tsuquadra area and Clo-oose, with routes chosen for conditions.
Explore this coastline in the context of Ditidaht history and the lives of people who have known it as home.

The experience
This is not the Half West Coast Trail backpacking itinerary. Instead, the Mini Explorer travels to the Ditidaht area, enters Pacific Rim National Park via Nitinaht Lake and uses the Narrows as a base for shorter explorations.
Depending on weather, tides and arrangements, the journey may include the Tsuquadra area, Clo-oose near the Cheewaht River, coastal caves and Tsusiat Falls. Boat access may offer opportunities to view marine wildlife; these are never guaranteed.
With lighter loads and approximately two and a half days devoted to walking, the experience is more accessible than a full traverse, but exposed and slippery coastal terrain still requires reasonable mobility and preparation.

Your journey
Based on Coastal Bliss's published Mini WCT itinerary. Boat excursions and hiking routes are subject to weather, tides, safety and local access arrangements.
Pickup in Nanaimo or at an agreed ferry terminal. Travel toward Nitinaht Lake and the Ditidaht community of Balaats'adt. The published itinerary includes an overnight stay at the Nitinaht Motel.
Park orientation, then boat transportation to Nitinaht Narrows, the base for the coastal part of the journey. Conditions permitting, a boat excursion may take you toward Tsusiat Falls and marine wildlife viewing.
Walk a section of the West Coast Trail in the Tsuquadra area, exploring coastal forest and the traces and stories of a historically significant Ditidaht place.
Hike south toward Clo-oose and the Cheewaht River area, learning about early settler history and the challenging coastal environment. Return to the Narrows, take the boat back across the lake and drive to Nanaimo.

Beyond the kilometres
This is an opportunity to look beyond the distance walked: the places, people, wildlife and history that make the West Coast Trail meaningful.
Ask about a departureBefore you go
Although the walking is shorter and loads are lighter, expect mud, wet roots, uneven shore rock and changing weather. This is not a paved or universally easy walk.
Sturdy boots, waterproof outerwear and suitable layers are important. We provide a preparation package and can discuss optional equipment rentals.
Arrange to reach Nanaimo by the agreed pickup time; travelling to the island the day before is usually sensible. Do not book non-refundable connections until departure arrangements are confirmed.
Common questions
No. This is a lighter-load explorer based near Nitinaht Narrows, not a multi-day point-to-point backpacking traverse.
The currently published schedule states dates to be determined and asks guests to book directly by phone or email.
No. Marine viewing depends on wildlife, tides and weather. The proposed boat excursion can change or be cancelled.
